The Laurel School District is seeking qualified applicants for Specialized Needs Aide position(s) for the current school year. This is a Level IV position, with a current starting wage of $16.20 per hour.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works in varying capacities in accordance with assigned roles.
  • Assists instructional personnel with preparation of learning materials and activities.
  • Assists students individually or in small groups to deliver or reinforce lessons and monitor study activities.
  • Monitors and assists students in varied locations; maintains standards of behavior and utilizes established disciplinary policies when necessary.
  • Performs a variety of general clerical duties for instructional and non-instructional staff, such as filing, typing, and duplication/distribution of materials, supply inventory and assembling resource materials.
  • Assists in maintaining a variety of reports and records.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment.
  • Assists in scoring tests; computing and recording grades.
  • Reports disciplinary concerns to appropriate staff in accordance with current policy/procedure.
  • Familiarity with materials and equipment used within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Attends relevant meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Meet communication needs of students with specialized needs.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist with feeding students and maintaining fluid balance with technique appropriate for the student’s age and physical condition.
  • Treat students with specialized needs with respect and dignity.
  • Manage and operate medical equipment safely and correctly.
  • Demonstrate ability to assist with toileting and personal hygiene while maintaining the dignity of the student.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide medical interventions that are delegated from other professionals such as administering medication after training, checking blood sugars, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Universal Precautions to prevent exposure to bodily fluids and communicable disease.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in de-escalation techniques and skills.

Only minimum duties are listed.  Other functions may be required as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of at least two years of study at an institute of higher education; obtain an associate or higher degree or meet a rigorous standard of quality; and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment the knowledge of and ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and math.
  • Successful completion of certified nursing assistant or medical assistant program or desire to obtain certification within 6 months of hire or equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of relevant nursing care.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of general concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics.
  • Knowledge of public education goals and objectives.
  • Assume responsibility for assisting in supervision of students.
  • Perform routine records keeping, clerical work and light typing.
  • Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in instructional settings.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm, positive, and receptive attitude toward children.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, parents, and general public.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and effectively manage time and responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of employment and student matters.
