The Laurel School District is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Foreign Language Interpreter position(s) within the District. This is a Level V, as-needed only position, with a beginning wage of $16.57 per hour.
The Foreign Language Interpreter plays a crucial role in supporting English Language Learner (ELL) students and their families by providing accurate interpretation and translation services. This position requires fluency in multiple languages and involves translating documents, assessments, and communications between the school and non-English speaking families. The interpreter must be knowledgeable about special education documents and laws to ensure accurate translation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), evaluations, and other related materials. This role helps bridge language barriers, ensuring ELL students and their families fully understand the educational process, especially in matters related to special education.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Fluency in at least two languages other than English, including proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing.
- Knowledge of special education laws and terminology, including IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), IEP (Individualized Education Program), and other relevant guidelines.
- Completion of at least two years of higher education in language studies, interpretation, education, or a related field.
- Experience with educational settings, preferably within K-12, with familiarity with school district policies and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
- Confidentiality and sensitivity when handling student information, adhering to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations.
- Cultural competency to ensure accurate and respectful interpretation for diverse populations.
- Ability to adapt language and tone appropriately for age, understanding level, and context.
- Previous interpreting experience in special education settings (preferred).
- Certification in interpretation (e.g., from the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators or similar organization) or willingness to obtain certification within a specified time frame.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in preparation of bilingual materials for special education, ensuring that translated content is both linguistically and culturally appropriate for the target audience.
- Conduct pre-meeting briefings with special education staff to understand key points, jargon, and objectives for accurate and effective interpretation.
- Support families in understanding their rights within the special education system, helping them navigate legal processes and educational resources.
- Monitor and manage interpretation flow during meetings to ensure that all parties have ample opportunity to speak, ask questions, and receive clarifications.
- Identify potential misunderstandings or language barriers during communication and work to clarify information as needed.
- Adapt interpreting methods (consecutive or simultaneous) based on the context of each meeting and the comfort level of participants.
- Handle high-stress situations professionally, especially when sensitive or challenging topics arise, maintaining composure and objectivity.
- Use interpretation technology (headsets, translation software, etc.) if applicable, to enhance accuracy and efficiency in various settings.
- Advocate for language accessibility by advising on ways to improve communication with non-English-speaking families, supporting district inclusivity goals.
- Travel between schools or meeting locations within the district as required to provide on-site interpretation services.
- Provide feedback on translated documents to help refine district resources and ensure alignment with the needs of the community.
